How much proportion of PCR plastic can be added in packaging?

Estimated Reading Time: 1 min

PCR plastic offers a sustainable packaging option, but the ideal proportion to incorporate depends on your specific needs. The percentage of PCR plastic in your packaging can range from a small amount to 100% PCR.

However, it’s crucial to understand the impact this has on the final product’s appearance:

–  PCR Percentage and Appearance: As the percentage of PCR content increases, the final product’s appearance might be affected. PCR plastic can sometimes have a slightly different colour or opacity compared to virgin plastic.  So, for packaging requiring high clarity or a specific colour, a lower PCR content might be necessary.

–  Functionality Considerations: In some cases, using a very high percentage of PCR plastic may slightly impact the strength or durability of the packaging. This is because the recycling process can shorten the plastic’s molecular chains to a certain extent.

Finding the Right Balance

–  Desired Aesthetics: If a clear or brightly coloured appearance is crucial for your branding, a lower PCR content might be preferable.

–  Product Requirements: For some products, like food packaging requiring high transparency, a lower PCR content might be necessary.

–  Sustainability Goals: If maximizing recycled content is a priority, a higher PCR percentage aligns better with your goals.
